Plasma Catecholamines, Sweat Electrolytes and Physiological Responses of Exercised Normal, Partial Anhidrotic and Anhidrotic Horses

چکیده
Problem statement: Malaysia imports horses from temperate countries to develop equine sports in the country. Several of these horses developed partial and complete anhidrosis. Approach: Normal, partial anhidrotic and anhidrotic horses were exercised to determine their sweating and physiological responses to exercise. The heart and respiratory rates, rectal temperature and blood samples were obtained before the horses were lunged at 10 km h for 1 h and at again at 15, 30, 45, 60 min and 24 h after exercise. The blood adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations were determined. Sweat samples were obtained at 60 min after exercise and analyzed for Na, K, Cl, urea and total protein concentrations. Results: The normal horses sweated profusely all over the body after 5 min into exercise, but the partial anhidrotic horses showed sweating in the neck, brisket, shoulder, rump, perineum and axilla only after 20-30 min of exercise. The sweat Na, K, Cl, urea and total protein concentrations were lower in the partial anhidrotic horses than in normal horses while the Na:K was higher. The heart and respiratory rates and rectal temperature of anhidrotic horses reached maximum values of 133.6±0.8 beats min and 186.8±0.5 breaths min and 41.1±0.0°C respectively and took much longer to return to resting levels than other horses. The resting adrenaline concentrations in the anhidrotic horses were higher than in partial anhidrotic and normal horses, with the mean post-exercise adrenaline: Noradrenaline consistently above 1.15. Conclusion: The most important factor in equine anhidrosis was failure of sweat glands to respond to adrenaline. The anhidrotic horse regulated body electrolytes by means other than sweating. Anhidrotic horses exhibited exercise intolerance, particularly in hot and humid climates. There is a need to formulate a special regime for exercising anhidrotic horses in the tropical environment.

Gene effect in carriers of anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.
Anhidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia In an extensive review of different forms of hereditary ectodermal dysplasia, Cockayne (I933) recognized two types of inheritance for the variety characterized by anhidrosis, hypotrichosis, and complete or partial anodontia. He postulated an X-linked recessive gene in families where males alone were affected and an autosomal dominant gene where females were invol...

Ectodermal dysplasia involves faulty development of embryonic ectoderm and its subsequent derivatives. Cockayne (1933) described 200 defects of ectodermal origin. It has been suggested that cases fall into two clinical and genetical groups (Weech, 1929). The hidrotic form appears usually to be determined by an autosomal dominant gene and the anhidrotic (or hypohidrotic) form by an X-linked rece...
متن کاملAnhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (EDA) protein expressed in MCF-7 cells associates with cell membrane and induces rounding.
Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (EDA) is a rare X-linked recessive disorder characterized by the absence or hypoplasia of hair, teeth and sweat glands. The gene responsible for the disorder has recently been cloned. The predicted gene product is a 135 amino acid protein with no significant homology to previously known proteins. As a first step to analyze function, we have studied the subcellula...

OBJECTIVE: To describe a rare syndrome affecting children, and to urge pediatricians to consider this diagnosis when investigating idiopathic fever in neonates. METHODS: We report a case of anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia syndrome in a 10 day old newborn in the neonatal intensive care unit at Hospital Geral de Caxias do Sul. The child presented recurrent episodes of fever since the first days o...
متن کاملGastric emptying, intestinal absorption of electrolytes and exercise performance in electrolyte-supplemented horses.
Horses lose considerably more electrolytes through sweating during prolonged exercise than can be readily replaced through feeds. The present study tested an oral electrolyte supplement (ES) designed to replace sweat electrolyte losses. We measured gastric emptying of 3 litres of ES (using gamma imaging of (99)Tc-sulfide colloid), the absorption of Na(+) and K(+) from the gastrointestinal tract...
